Early morning at Abingdon Weir
May 2023
Few Thames weirs are as easy to see and understand as the one beside Abingdon Lock. The path into Abbey Meadows and the town crosses the water that gushes over the weir from above the lock into the deep, turbulent weir pool. The simple, elegant weir mechanism shows clearly how water levels are carefully managed along the Thames from Lechlade far upstream, all the way down to London where the river meets the tide.
